Confession 1 — Built for white skin
The system was designed for one phenotype tier and retrofitted to the rest of the species
Publication record: Types I–IV were introduced in 1975, defined by sun-reactivity of white skin for UV-therapy dosing. Types V and VI were added thirteen years later. — Fitzpatrick, T.B., "The validity and practicality of sun-reactive skin types I through VI," Archives of Dermatology 124(6):869–871, 1988
The most ancestral human phenotype — present for 285,000+ years, carried by the majority of humans alive today — was absent from the instrument for its first thirteen years. The most derived mutation tier was the primary design subject. The scale was built around the exception and appended the rule. The thirteen-year interval is the finding: the classification was in clinical use, as a complete system, before the majority phenotype existed within it.
Confession 2 — Numbered backwards
The numbering system encodes the derived mutation as the origin point
Fitzpatrick Type I = palest, most UV-vulnerable, most derived mutation phenotype. Fitzpatrick Type VI = darkest, most UV-protected, most ancestral phenotype. The scale assigns Type I to the end of the evolutionary sequence and Type VI to its beginning. The numbering system performs the same agent-victim inversion as the Brussels Act word "infected" — the derived variant is positioned as the baseline, the ancestral form as the outlier. Every clinical tool built on top of Fitzpatrick inherits this inversion structurally.
Confession 3 — Narrowest range as reference standard
The phenotype with the least genetic diversity became the measuring stick for the entire species
"Studies demonstrate that European populations have the narrowest skin color variation, whereas groups categorized as 'brown' or 'black' exhibit a much wider range." — Fitzpatrick scale documentation
The PPCS Tier 5 phenotype cluster — the narrowest phenotypic range in the human species — was selected as the calibration standard for all human skin. The broadest phenotypic diversity, residing in African populations (Tier 1–2), was compressed into two categories (V and VI) added after the primary design was complete. The instrument measures the narrow end of the range and attempts to extend that measurement to the wide end. It cannot do so accurately — which is why 17 alternative classification systems now exist.
Confession 4 — Its own professional body confirms the failure
The American Academy of Dermatology's 2024 review is the prosecution's closing argument
"The Fitzpatrick skin type classification is most widely used and validated. However, it has numerous limitations including its conflation with race, ethnicity, and skin color." — Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2024, identifying 17 alternative skin classification systems
The system's own professional home — the body that publishes guidelines Fitzpatrick practitioners follow — has formally identified its limitations on the record, in a peer-reviewed journal, in 2024. The AAD's review found 17 alternatives, demonstrating that the clinical community already knows the Fitzpatrick scale is inadequate. It remains the default not because it is correct but because it is entrenched. This is DSCP persistence behavior operating in clinical infrastructure. The system that caused the misclassification writes the guidelines that perpetuate it.
Exhibit A — Propagation instance · Government primary source · Present tense
A national radiation protection authority publishes the inversion as public health guidance
Fitzpatrick Skin Type chart, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), Commonwealth of Australia. Scoring column: Type I = 0–6 · Type II = 7–13 · Type III = 14–20 · Type IV = 21–27 · Type V = 28–34 · Type VI = 35+

The zero point sits at the palest phenotype. In any measurement instrument the zero point is the reference frame; every other value is displacement from it. The scale therefore encodes eumelanin as a quantity added to a colourless baseline. The genetic sequence runs the opposite direction — maximum eumelanin is ancestral (PPCD Tier 1), and depigmentation is the derived subtraction (PPCD Tier 5). Type VI is scored as thirty-five units of displacement from origin rather than as the origin.
Resolution asymmetry, visible in the descriptor column: three of six tiers subdivide a single population by internal gradation — "fair skinned, fair haired Caucasians" (II), "darker Caucasians" (III), "Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Caucasians" (IV). The two tiers covering the widest phenotypic diversity on Earth are both hedged — "some Africans" (V), "darker Africans" (VI). Confession 3 demonstrated inside a single public document: high resolution where the instrument was designed, coarse hedged categories everywhere else.
Every burn-response descriptor on the chart is accurate. Nothing on it is false. The structural work is performed entirely by ordering and by zero-point placement — which is why adopting institutions inherit the inversion without encountering a false statement to correct. This is not misperception by the reader; it is a reference frame propagating intact through a document that is correct on its own terms.
Wobble Space — Boundary maintained
Intention and inertia remain observationally equivalent
Fitzpatrick 1975 was a UV-therapy dosing instrument built for a clinical population. Within that purpose, ordering by ascending UV tolerance and beginning at highest burn risk is defensible triage. The instrument functions correctly for what it was built to do. The corridor does not close whether the reference frame was chosen or inherited — and it does not need to. A structure that reproduces the inversion without ongoing intent requires no maintenance and no defence, which makes it more durable than one that does. The finding is the propagation, not the motive. Per Corroborating Record 1: the system is widely misused as a de facto classification of human constitutive skin colour, a purpose for which it was not created. In the view of this analyst, when any thing or entity exists as a being or a system and you cannot tell the difference between that things intent and inertia an outcome produced by intent and an outcome produced by inertia are identical objects. Same harm, same distribution, same resistance to correction. A distinction that changes nothing about any of those is ineffective for the instrument's purposes.
